5/1 - Relay for Life Planning Committee meeting held at the Monaghan Presbyterian Church beginning at 7 PM on Thursday, May 1st. 5/3 - York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has announced that the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program will take place on: Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 9AM to 1PM at Dover Township Municipal Building Parking Lot, 2480 W Canal Road, Dover, PA 17315. York County residents: Safely manage household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection program. Household hazardous waste includes any products from the home which are corrosive (drain cleaners or bleach), flammable (gasoline), reactive (chemistry kits) or toxic (pesticides). Examples of Accepted Items: Thermometers containing mercury, liquid mercury, auto products (transmission and brake fluids, car batteries, antifreeze), rechargeable batteries--Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead (Pb), driveway sealant, fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline and kerosene, herbicides, pesticides and insecticides, household cleaners (oven, drain, etc.), photographic and pool chemicals. Do Not Bring: Latex or oil-based paint. Paint can be placed in your regular garbage for pick-up. Seal the containers tightly to prevent spillage. The Resource Recovery Center uses an air pollution control system to ensure safe processing. Also, no Aerosol Cans, Alkaline Batteries (AA's, AAA's, C's, D's, etc.), Explosives, Ammunition, Propane Tanks, Radioactive Waste or Used Motor Oil. Alkaline batteries may be disposed of in your regular garbage. 5/3 - Family Fun Night - Citizens' Hose Fire Co #1 is sponsoring a Family Fun Night on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Doors open at 4:00 PM. Meal served from 6:00-7:00 PM. Donation $3.00 or 2 for $5.00. Refreshments included. 5/3 - Adult Disco Dance Night - NYCSF is sponsoring an Adult Disco Dance Night on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 7-9 PM at the Sports Learning Center. $15 per couple and includes refreshments and a memory picture. Friends and families welcomed! 5/9 - Youth Game Night - NYCSF is sponsoring a Youth Game Night on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 6:30-9 PM at the Sports Learning Center for students in 2nd through 5th grades. Airy UMC will have its 8th annual pancake breakfast and yard sale on May 10, 2008, from 7 AM until 1 PM, sponsored by the Junior Church. The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. The cost is $4.00 and will be served by the children and youth from the church. The church is located at 2020 Pinetown Road, Wellsville. Follow Route 177 to Pinchot State Park Office and turn onto Mt. Airy Road. Go to the end and make a left. The church is on the right. Signs will be posted. In addition to the yard sale, there will be baked goods and hot dogs available for sale. This event is rain or shine. All proceeds will go to the building fund. 5/13 - The final Team Captain meeting for the ACS Relay For Life of Dillsburg will be held Tuesday, May 13th., 7:00 pm at Bostic Field. All team Captain's or a representative of the team should attend this meeting as tent sites and other instructions will be given out. Don't forget to have your team members sell chances on the "HOPE" Quilt - sell Luminarias - sell ads for the Program Booklet - invite Survivors to attend the Survivor Celebration - invite Caregivers - support the Golf Tournament on May 30th and bid on the Sports Memorabilia. If interested in forming a team, e-mail Cindy at cagood@embarqmail.com. 5/15 - CANCELED- FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR OF JAPANESE COMICS TELLS HOW GIRLS AS WELL AS BOYS GET LITERATE WITH THEM Dillsburg Library – May 15 –7 p.m. Allyson A.W.Lyga teaches graduate courses in the graphic novel at the University of Delaware and McDaniel College. She’ll bring her book Graphic Novels in Your Media Center on May 15 at 7 p.m.to the Dillsburg Area Public Library, where participants in her workshop will review a graphic novel and make concrete curricular connections to their own areas of responsibility. This program concludes the series COMICS FOM THE CLASSICS TO THE GRAPHIX, co-sponsored by the Northern York County School District and in line with the library’s designation as a “Community Resource for Lifelong Learning”. The graphic novel is a form of visual storytelling that covers genres such fantasy, science, biography and history. Maus and American Born Chinese are well-known, national-prize winning examples of the format. As a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar in Japan, Ms. Lyga studied Japanese graphic novels, or manga, to see how the Japanese learned from and loved them. Allyson is a Board member of “Kids Love Comics,” which promotes child-safe comics for schools and libraries. Her presentation at the Dillsburg Library will show how comics foster literacy, and model graphic-novel lessons connected to national and state standards. This offering earns teachers Act 48 credit and librarians CE hours. It is supported by the Scott Derr family and Comprehensive Financial Associates. This event is to honor military personnel who are serving or who have served in the United States Armed Services. At this event NYCSF will be collecting items for care packages to be sent to our troops. The following items are being requested: gum, fruit chips, cookies, chips, pretzels, mints, candy, snack cakes, medicated powders, baby wipes, tooth care products, magazines, puzzle books, pencils/pens, notebooks, and silly string. When purchasing these items be sure to not purchase items that may melt. 5/23 - Free Family Film Series - NYCSF is sponsoring a Free Family Film Series Sunday, May 25, 2008 at the Citizens' Hose Fire Co Hall.
